Chiiilllll my Ba..bies.....

The news is out. Conan to take Leno's place on 'Tonight' show. Even though this is still 5 years out, I can't help to feel a bit saddened. There is something special about that late hour. It is just at that time of day, at least for me, where everything has finally winded down. There are not to many distractions and it feels OK to just chill out on the couch and taken in some clever humor. It also makes you feel like your a part of something that is not so mainstream, even though Conan has become quite the popular TV show host.

What are your thoughts? Do you guys think that the new time slot will change his style? In what ways do you think that his humor will affect the way that people percieve comedy? Will the general public be more apt to dish out cheese? Have I just posted a really boring topic that is really just trying to be something that it cannot? Or, will we even care about any of this 5 years down the road? I guess I should consider that in five years, I too will be bedding down for a good night's rest at an earlier hour. I should be thankful that NBC is thinking about me and had the foresight to plan ahead so that I may go to sleep with a smile on my face, hopefully.

It's okay, Deirdo. The Conan promotion is not only a good thing, but--indeed--a great thing. Although I've always had a bit of respect for Leno ("you know, it's so fashionable to take a cheap shot at Jay Leno, but the truth is, the man is out there night after night with fresh material...."), but I think he does for the nighttime television demographic what those "Hover-Round" commercials did, which is appeal to the elderly population and, provided that, those growing elderly. Conan's comedic stylings NEED to be at the early spot for, if not him, then who? That in itself is a scary question to think about. Kilborn? Stewart? I hope not. After all, we're talking about the man who wrote for the shows we watched and loved in youth: The Simpsons and SNL (at its prime). In many ways, he could be slightly responsible for a fraction of a generation's sense of humor. These same people are slowly becoming the components of a functioning society-- they are doctors, professors, lawyers, and all that. Therefore, it is only suitable that Conan come under the spotlight, lest he be shadowed any longer.

Yeah, I heard this on the Dan Patrick Show yesterday of all places, and this is a sticky one. Conan (in my opinion and several others') is one of the funniest people alive, if not THE funniest. But he won't be able to be the same kind of funny an hour earlier. So many of his jokes are basically bashing his own "lame middle-of-the-night" show. NBC would almost certainly make him adjust for middle America, and I doubt he'd be able to stay in New York. He'd have to move it out to "farkin' fake-as-Hell L.A." And the thought of Conan in LA is a sad one. Anyway, like you said, it's a long way off. In five years the older folks who hate Conan's sense of humor might not stay up as late. And Jay may even change his mind. Who's to say NBC isn't just using this to keep Conan under contract?
And I'd like to think Drew's Leno respect comes only to use the Stewie quote. Because it certainly can't have come from anything Leno's done on his show.

I agree. Conan is ready for the Tonight Show slot, but it is ready for him? I can't help but be nervous that early-late-nighters (?) will not appreciate our beloved Conan. I shudder to think of a world without him.

Thank you all for your comments. I feel we have actually accomplished something. Let's just be sure to watch the first 'early-late show' that Conan hosts, together. Then one of us can remember this post and its comments and say "Remember that blog five years ago. Remember how we said we should say something when we watched the first early-late show that Conan hosts. Well I do. And I have said it." Thank you in advance to the one of us that makes this dream a reality. God Bless.

Just as an afterthought, and having relatively nothing to do with this particular post, can someone intestigate the mystery of Tabula Rasa, and tell me what the hell is going on? It is almost like some people read Ray Bradbury's "Farenheit 451" and took a negative view of it, then transformed that view into a cult. Or not. This is a blog from a disciple of that movement who chronicles the "Burning Man" and everything related to whatever this is. Please check it out.

As an "end of the road" post I would just like to say not only is Conin ready for the early spot, but I think he should be alotted the entire two hour talk show block. I mean he's a self proclaimed master of qauntity over quality. Man Leno is so lame. He instantly agrees with whatever guest he has on no matter their views. Also he brings nothing creative or random to the conversation table. He's a glorified teleprompter, never strays from network standards, also is the program director's prison bitch, and oh god don't get me started on that cardboard cutout dumbass Kevin guy.
He's past his prime, allready. I don't think Conin would ever sellout to "early show" restrictions.
